Davis provides services to analyze the trajectory of exhaust plumes under varying environmental conditions. Two analysis methods are employed in order to consider both a large number of relative wind conditions and achieve high fidelity.

  • Davis has developed a proprietary code, PLUMETRAJ, which is based upon empirical results from Baham and McCallum. The code is able to quickly step through a large number of relative wind velocities and identify the conditions which result in impingement. These results are combined with statistics on the likelihood of each wind velocity in order to identify those conditions which are of greatest concern.
  • Davis analyses the conditions of greatest concern using a commercial computation fluid dynamics (CFD) code (Fluent). The entire ship is modeled in three dimensions, and the plume trajectory and impinged skin temperatures are predicted using second order turbulence models. Various plume cooling solutions can be attempted in the course of the analysis.

Davis designs and supplies plume cooling hardware and so can guarantee that the solution arrived at through the plume trajectory analysis can be delivered in practice.

Some of the plume cooling solutions available are:

  • Plume temperature reduction via a plume cooling system like an Ejector or Sea Water Injection (SWI);
  • Redirect the exhaust exit; and/or
  • Relocate the exhaust exit.
